     Postgraduate Initial Teacher Training Courses (PGCE)

*11-16 years

**Also available via an open distance learning programme (ODL). This allows students to study from home, except when attending short residential courses and for school experience.

   Subject Enhancements on the Initial Education and Training Course

  • Mathematics: For those students who have been accepted on to the PGCE course but need to refresh their subject knowledge, a 6 week preparatory course may be available. This option would be discussed at interview with suitable candidates.
  • Welsh Medium Most training is undertaken in English medium schools, but there may be an opportunity to undertake training in a Welsh medium school for Welsh and bi-lingual speakers. Top-up sessions are available to develop Welsh language skills appropriate for teaching.
  • Some subject courses offer First Aid as an additional course (e.g. Science, Geography)
  • We do not offer assessor courses.

   Undergraduate Initial Teacher Training Courses with Qualified Teacher Status

These programmes aim to help existing or intending full or part-time lecturers/tutors/teachers/instructors/trainers in Further, Higher and Adult/Community Education to gain an understanding of the principles and methods of learning and teaching.

  • Principles of Teaching – Level 6

This is a part-time programme designed to help those from many disciplines to obtain a “taster” of what teaching is like. These programmes aim to help existing or intending full or part-time lecturers/tutors/teachers/instructors/trainers in Further, Higher and Adult/Community Education to gain an understanding of the principles and methods of learning and teaching.

   Foundation Degree Courses

  • Foundation Degree in Learning Support

This is a three year, part-time, work-based programme designed and delivered by the Swansea School of Education in partnership with local schools. The programme provides an opportunity for teaching assistants to engage in professional development.

  • BA(Hons) Educational Studies (Three Years)

    Educational Studies looks at a broad range of educational issues and develops understanding of learning at all ages, including lifelong learning through a variety of contexts. The degree will equip students with the understanding of educational policy, process and curriculum, along with the knowledge that is needed by professionals in education. Some of the issues explored are diversity in education, creativity and educational research. The Educational Studies programme will combine the academic study of education with the vocational preparation for a range of careers in education, starting first with a pathway suitable for preparation for careers in school based education. Students who wish to become primary school teachers will be guaranteed an interview on the PGCE programme. Offers of a place are dependent, in part, on meeting the entry requirements of the PGCE course.

Prepare to Teach
""

A ‘taster’ course for those considering secondary teaching as a career. The course offers flexible start and finish time, a short school placement , a school facilitator and tutor support.

At the end of the course participants should know whether they are temperamentally suited to be teachers and whether there are any gaps in their subject knowledge.

The subjects currently offered are:
Mathematics, Science, Modern Foreign Languages, Design and Technology, Cymraeg and English.

Swansea is an attractive and thriving seaside city. It is bordered to the west by the Gower Peninsula, Britain’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and to the north of the city lies the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The campus university, of approximately 6,000 students, offers excellent sports and social facilities, including a theatre and nearby arts centre.
The Welsh National Swimming Pool development has become a popular attraction.
