   Postgraduate Certificate in Education

  Flexible PGCE (11-18 years)

This course, currently the only one of its type in Wales, is operational from March 2007. Students domiciled in Wales will be able to complete the course in Welsh schools.

The subject lines offered are: Design & Technology, Geography, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages (French, German, Spanish), Music and Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)

This is a flexible PGCE, offering a pattern of home study designed to fit personal circumstances, with a part-time or full time training route. The Open University will take account of previous experience and tailor programmes of study to meet individual needs.

From September 2007, in line with QAA requirements, it is planned that this qualification will become a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. It is hoped that a masters module will be developed in order to convert this professional-level qualification into a Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

Partnerships with schools are at the heart of this course and we work with schools that are committed to initial teacher education.

Student teachers are supported, trained, guided and assessed by a school-based subject mentor and a university based subject tutor. A school based school co-ordinator, a university-based subject leader and a university-based regional staff tutor are also part of the support team.
